Astronergy ZBB TOPCon product gains TÜV Rheinland’s world’s first TOPCon certification https://www.pv-magazine.com/press-releases/astronergy-zbb-topcon-product-gains-tuv-rheinlands-worlds-first-topcon-certification/ Wed, 11 Oct 2023 09:23:28 +0000 https://www.pv-magazine.com/?post_type=press_release&p=230735 With the advantages of low mechanical stress and high reliability, the ASTRO N ZBB TOPCon 3.0 module products of Astronergy obtained TÜV Rheinland certified world’s first certification for such kind of product on Oct. 10th, making the mass production of the ZBB TOPCon 3.0 products nearer to coming true.

ZBB, or so-called ‘Zero BusBar Interconnection Technology’, could reduce the silver paste use (main material for busbar) and improve the aesthetics of PV modules, which is one of the main developing paths for the PV industry to be much more environmentally friendly and higher efficiency, and to achieve technological breakthroughs.

Independently developed by Astronergy, the ZBB TOPCon 3.0 module product has over 20 related patents in product design, processing, and material and equipment plans, said Dr Alex Hsu, the CTO at Astronergy.

ZBB TOPCon module manufacturing could be conducted under lower temperatures and the products could be compatible with thinner silicon wafers, reducing silver paste consumption, thereby making module products much more environmentally friendly and much more sustainable, while also improving the bending resistance of the PV modules, added Dr Alex Hsu.

The tech could also help to increase the light-receiving area of the PV cells and reduce the optical losses of PV modules. Meanwhile, due to the removal of the busbar, the ZBB module has better current carrier collection efficiency and aesthetics.

Furthermore, Dr Alex Hsu said that, due to the finer and evenly distributed welding wires of this type of module, the mechanical load performance of such products is better; and the application of ZBB tech on TOPCon 3.0 PV cells enabled the module power to reach over 590W with an efficiency of over 22.8%. And thanks to the ZBB tech, ASTRO N n-type TOPCon products could have a bifaciality rate of 80%.

As the first enterprise in the industry to obtain the ZBB n-type TOPCon 3.0 PV module product certification, the mass production of such products for the market is currently steadily advancing and is expected to be achieved by the end of this year; and module products manufactured with ZBB tech to have better aesthetics are also under planning.

Successful pilot shows localised repair as viable solution to 91% of non-functioning solar lights across Zambia https://www.pv-magazine.com/press-releases/successful-pilot-shows-localised-repair-as-viable-solution-to-91-of-non-functioning-solar-lights-across-zambia/ Tue, 10 Oct 2023 09:54:52 +0000 https://www.pv-magazine.com/?post_type=press_release&p=230556 Latest research from international development charity SolarAid’s repair pilot in Zambia shows that localised repair presented a viable solution to 91% of the solar products that had fallen into disrepair, sitting on shelves across the country. This points to the potential of repair of an estimated 110 million non-functioning solar products across Africa which would otherwise contribute to the growing problem of electronic waste on the continent. Ahead of International E-Waste Day, 14th October, these results are prompting the charity to advocate for increased finance and a stricter repair agenda to address the rise of non-functioning solar products.

SolarAid is a UK-based, pioneering international charity tackling poverty and climate change by providing access to clean, safe solar lights in underserved rural communities in sub-Saharan Africa.

In the latest research emerging from their pioneering solar light repair pilot in Zambia, ”Solar Saver: second-generation lights”, findings are showing that not only tend 90% of customers not to throw out non-functioning solar products, storing them in the hope of being able to use them again in the future, 91% of products were also successfully repaired, illustrating the size of the potential repair market.

Since 2010, an estimated 150 million Solar Energy Kits have been distributed throughout Africa, revolutionising electricity access for millions of off-grid and rural households. However, it is estimated that nearly 75% (110 million) of these products have fallen into disrepair. These new findings points to the opportunity of reducing electronic waste in countries currently lacking access to effective recycling.

With recycling currently unable to play a major role in addressing these potential waste flows, due to high logistical costs and a lack of relevant infrastructure, ahead of International E-Waste day 14th October, SolarAid is now advocating for a more salient response to address the rise of non-functioning solar products across the continent by focusing on repair and extending the lifespan of solar products.

Together with the University of New South Wales they are publishing a white paper on the potential of repair in rural communities “Off Grid Solar Repair in Africa: From Burden to Opportunity?”, aiming to share knowledge and learnings to facilitate replication of their successful repair pilot across the continent.

Fred Mwale, Project Manager on the programme in Zambia says“The results coming out of this pilot are showing clearly the opportunities that the circular economy could serve in sub-Saharan Africa, where there is an ineffective recycling system but a vibrant repair economy serving rural areas.”

In their pilot programme, SolarAid tested decentralised local repair models, which they discovered built trust in the rural communities and further benefited local business and speed of repair.

While aiming to keep testing and sharing learnings, hoping the model will be adopted and scaled by distributors, SolarAid are also recognising existing barriers to fully realise a vibrant repair economy for these products.

Jamie McCloskey, Director of Programmes and Partnerships at SolarAid says, “This programme shows there is a huge opportunity to reduce electronic waste and give second life to solar products across the continent. But there is also a big need for more investment to build an enabling environment with repair capacity, as well as policy changes and manufacturer buy-in, such as repair standards and access to spares.”

Rodgers Mwamba, newly trained Repair Technician in Zambia says,

“I want to teach my fellow technicians on proper disposal of electronic waste because it is not only batteries that are harmful to the environment, some other electronic components also have adverse effects when not disposed of well (…) The effects of climate change have been felt here, things like change in rainfall patterns and sometimes drought.”

Zhangbei is subject to consistent wind throughout the year at an average speed of 15.4 m/s, ideal conditions for the study undertaken.

The CGC study began in September 2022 and lasted for 12 months. Vertex 600W+ bifacial and mono-facial test modules were installed using three fastening methods: screws, aluminum alloy clamps and reinforced method (screws and clamps). The modules were positioned at a minimum height of 0.8 meters above the ground. The PV power station’s installation conditions were simulated to guarantee a comprehensive empirical study.

It was shown that in the first nine months of the study the Vertex 600W+ modules functioned as they should in the windy conditions, with no defects shown in the EL images. The torque values of the bolts and clamps on the modules exceeded 16N, ensuring stability, with no noticeable signs of loosening.

In the three months to June the Vertex 600W+ bifacial modules generated a total of 2,500.87 kWh of energy. Compared with 600W+ mono-facial modules, bifacial modules displayed a marked advantage in energy yield with an energy gain of 8.82%. The study demonstrated that Vertex 600W+ modules provide exceptional reliability and energy yield, ensuring safety and increased yield for PV power plants operating in consistently windy environments. They thus guarantee long-term revenue for customers.

Trina Solar’s Vertex series modules had earlier passed rigorous tests, including non-uniform snow load test, extreme low temperature mechanical load test, hail test, multiple extreme dynamic mechanical load test and extreme wind tunnel test. Trina Solar has maintained its Top Performer status nine years in a row in the PV Product Qualification Program operated by PV Evolution Labs. Its Vertex N series modules have also passed the extended reliability test of the Renewable Energy Test Center.
